SAC Honors Academy Earns National Recognition

The SAC Honors Academy was recently recognized by Excelencia in Education, a national organization, for making a significant impact on Latino students at San Antonio College and in our community. 

According to the organization, the Honors Academy is a very compelling program which earned recognition as “Honorable Mention.” With this recognition, a summary of the program will be highlighted in the “2018 What Works for Latino Student Success in Higher Education Compendium.”

“The SAC Honors Academy is an amazing program and I am not surprised that we are being recognized in this manner,” said Dr. Robert Vela, President of San Antonio College. “This program provides students a solid foundation and empowers them for future educational and career success.” 

The SAC Honors Academy is open to high school graduates and college freshmen with less than 15 credits. Students accepted into the program are matched with faculty mentors, receive one-on-one advising, and become part of a focused learning community. According to EdExcelencia.org, Excelencia recognizes programs at 4-year, 2-year, and community-based organizations which address issues in a multitude of areas, including: access, retention, transfer, support, and academic program. This year, a total of 139 nominations were received from 27 states, Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. There were 21 finalists, 20 programs to watch, and 7 honorable mentions.
